  • About Castello Thomson

    Property

This exotic resort-like estate is situated on the southern shores of Lake Como in the desirable 'primo bacino' area close to Villa D'Este and Como. The main castle home is surrounded by five acres of terraced gardens and has a private lakeside terrace and boatslip. The estate also has two guest homes: The Chalet, and The Limonaia

    History

The Castello was built on a 9th century fortification tower where signal fires were lit to warn Como and Milan of invading barbarian hordes. This strategic lookout post was also used in the 16th century and expanded into an armoury. From the Castello windows, one can see clearly the sweeping views both to the north and south to Como which is what makes it such an incredible sun kissed location to this day.

The Castello was first converted to a residence in 1980 by renowned Venetian architect Tobia Scarpa. The moorish influences in Scarpa's Venetian heritage are evident in the architecture and the interiors. Scarpa was given carte blanche to transform the Castello into an exotic family getaway by then owner, iconic modern furniture magnate Piero Ambrogio Busnelli of B&B Italia. The monogram 'PAB' embedded in the stone kitchen terrace was preserved to pay homage to the Castello's famed previous owner.
